Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

Kyoto, 7-12  March 2021

TRACIT participated in the Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The special session of the Congress examined the criminal elements that underpin all forms of illicit trade and, specifically, those undermining the ambitions of SDG 16 to achieve peace and justice in the world.

TRACIT's participation aimed to inform decision makers of the urgency to address the criminal elements associated with illicit trade that hold back progress on achieving SDG 16.

The special session featured:
Mr. Graham Mott, Economic Affairs Officer at UNCTAD
Mr.  Jeffrey Hardy, Director-General of TRACIT
Mr. Shane Britton, CEO of Crime Stoppers International
Mr. Filippo Musca, Director General of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights

Examining the negative impacts of illicit trade on SDG 16

The TRACIT report, "Examining the negative impacts of illicit trade on SDG 16",  updates key findings from the 2019 Mapping the Impact of Illicit Trade on the Sustainable Development Goals to focus on the criminal elements underpinning illicit trade and their relationship to SDG 16. Additionally, it incorporates observations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which show that criminal groups have swiftly exploited the situation and entrenched their positions in illicit trade.

The report was presented at the Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
